Week 9 Reflection

This week was the final week of Exhibition. We are all upset that this Exhibition is finished because we quite enjoyed this time together.
Putting Up Our Boards
On Monday, we spent a lot of time putting up the background and pinning some information on our boards. We also made some kind of chain things with paper leaves attached on to put up at the last minute. The leaves on the chains contained information on how to reduce pollution. We did that because we were afraid that our board didn’t have enough space for our long bits of information. On Tuesday morning we started to panic with our boards because we still hadn’t really finished pinning up everything while the others had  already started stapling. We then worked together much better and finished pinning everything very quickly. Soon, we started stapling but then we realised that the bottom of the board was quite empty so we had to go back to the classroom to find some of our artwork we made to cover up the bottom.
Drama
The drama went quite well because we added some humorous bits in to make it a bit more interesting. We also had an extra practice at Antonio’s house on Tuesday afternoon, though everybody was not there we added the humorous bits and made sure that everybody knew their lines. On Tuesday night, we performed it quite well because nobody forgot their lines and the parents, teachers and students laughed and it seemed like they enjoyed it. On Wednesday morning, we had to perform again because Shatin Junior School and Kowloon Junior School came to visit our Exhibition. This performance also went successfully though we had a  mistake because Antonio’s fake car was upside down but everybody laughed at that hilariously.

Overall we thought that everything went successfully because we didn’t have any big problems this week.

Week 8 Reflection

This week we followed Mrs Lowe’s advice from the last mentor meeting: finish all our display work as quick as possible. She said that there was nothing really to be done and that all we needed to do is to totally memorize our script. We did laminate all of our title, most of our subtitles and some of the photos that we have took during the 8 weeks of Exhibition.
Display Work
This week we have also finished our English and Math work as well as the things we finished as mentioned above. We are all a bit worried because the titles that we have finished typing up couldn’t be printed as all of the printers at school on Friday were either jammed, broken or had low toner/ink. Because of this, Jaime will type out our titles again, print it out and mount it on colour paper.
Our group has decided on using newspaper for the background and any bright colour for mounting our work on. We have also decided on some fonts we are going to use. For titles, we are using Luckiest Guy, for subtitles we are using Bubblegum Sans and for body text, we are using Coming Soon. These fonts are only available on Google Drive so when we are using Word, we choose the best fonts available.
Action
Our drama for action is going to be acted on the Exhibition Day/Night. We have started practicing in the hall to get our standing arrangements right. We have also started bringing our props and using the presentation we made (our backgrounds) for practice. We all feel like we have to learn our lines as soon as possible because some members still haven’t learned our lines. We also need to get our props sorted out because sometimes, we have to use quite a lot of time to get into our props (eg. the car) Also, Ms Lynn gave us advice on how to edit our script. She said that since the Exhibition included Mandarin work, she asked us if we could add some Mandarin to the script.

We all hope that we can finish all our work on time and that our drama will go smoothly. We also hope that our display boards will turn up nice and organized.

Week 7 Reflection

Week 7 Reflection

This week we have finished our lesson and making recycled paper with 3K. We thought that everything went really well with no failures or mistakes. We have now started doing our display board’s work. Our group has decided on who's doing what for our research summaries. At school, we have finished typing up, printing and laminating our title, group number, lines of inquiry and concepts. Our group still has a lot more to do!
This weeks weekend homework was to finish our non-chronological reports and to finish typing up our display work assigned by Mrs Lowe.
Action
This week we had a lesson with 3K. We did 2 activities: A lesson with Hogan and Jaime who presented the Powtoon and the board game. In the end we introduced the drama but there was no time left on that afternoon so Ms King told us that they will do the drama when they have time and show it to us. She also said that we did a good job! The other activity is making recycled paper. It went pretty well but the only problem was that we made a bit of a mistake on the first lesson. In the second lesson, we learnt from our mistakes and eventually
managed to finish the second lesson with less mistakes. The tidying up was really fun!
Display board preparation
When we had a mentor meeting with Mrs Lowe, we told her that we finished our action so she hurried us to the next stage - Display board preparation. We chose our roles: out of these 4: -Printing -Cutting -Mounting -Laminating. Jaime chose cutting, Hogan chose printing, Janice chose mounting while Antonio chose laminating. We did quite a lot of titles on Friday which made us proud of our quick work.

Week 6 Reflection

Week 6 Reflection

This week, we have finished writing our action plan and have started getting everything ready for our action. We have also finished our survey trip which means that research is all finally done. Our group has already started planning our presentation, how we should place everything on our display board and how should we make the display more creative. We have finished typing up our Lines of Inquiry on a tree outline to put on our display board.

Action
Our final action is to teach Year 3's how to make recycled paper, a lesson about what global warming is and tips on reducing pollution. We got the instructions from Ms Burley, as well as the equipment we needed.
We are also writing up a drama with 6L02. This week we are concentrating on finishing our script. Next week, we want to get all the props and costumes finished. We all have to start learning our lines once the script is done.

Exhibition Maths and English work
We all have started doing our Exhibition Maths and English work. Hogan and Jaime are writing non-chronological reports, Janice is writing a story while Antonio is writing a recount for our English work. For our maths work, we are all putting our survey results into graphs and charts (pie charts, bar graphs etc.)

Survey trip
Our Survey Trip has also taken place this Wednesday. We went to Festival Walk in the pouring rain, and managed to survey 24 people. We successfully filled in all the Chinese Surveys but we still have 3 English Surveys not filled in. We have finished writing our data on a Google Spreadsheet and we also have put some data into charts and graphs.

Overall, we are working well. We are still a little behind on our action, so we are trying to catch up on that. Therefore, we hope that next week our plans for action go successfully.

Week 5 Reflection

Week 5 Reflection

This week we have brought our research to a close and have went on our first field trip to the Fanling Resource Centre. It was great except that Antonio was sick and he couldn’t go. We took many photos and wrote down many notes. We also took many leaflets from the resource centre.

Our group is a bit behind in taking action and because we took so much time researching which made us stuck on summarising on research and we were really scared and Miss Fisher (our class teacher) had to talk to some of us about being balanced and that we should have more rest.

This week we have just finished all our research and now we are summarising the research on to a Venn diagram though we are not finished. The parts of the Venn diagram is line of inquiry 1 and line of inquiry 2.

We also felt like changing our logo, but then since this week we didn’t have much time so we didn’t change it. Some of the group members want to cartoon it because the logo now is not a cartoon but a very realistic one.

We did our Exhibition Work Breakdown to make sure that we are all using one of the skills that we learnt before in English, Maths, and Mandarin.  We all have done the Chinese Survey so we all planning to put that down in our Mandarin section.

We were planning to do a comic strip to teach children about saving the environment but then we also found out that comic strips are made out of paper and the children may just dump it without recycling. Now, we want to try and teach children how to make recycled paper.

We had a mentor meeting on Friday and Mrs Lowe told us to stop researching. We also needed to think about action and carry out our action as quick as possible. Our group has already started writing up our Action Plan though we are not finished. We want to try to teach Year 1, 2 and 3s how to make recycled paper.

Skills we have used or developed this week:
  • Being balanced
  • Summarising skills
  • Researching skills
  • Time Management skills
  • Cooperation
Knowledge we have used or developed this week:
  • More ways to reduce pollution
  • The greenhouse effect
  • How important forests are
  • Good note taking

Our trip:
Problems we had with our Fanling Environmental Resource Centre trip (before and after):
  • We could not find a parent that would volunteer to accompany us
  • We had a mix up with our email with Mr Harrison asking if any teachers were available to help us during the trip
  • Jaime called the wrong number
Successes we had with our Fanling Environmental Resource Centre tip (before and after):
  • We found our way around Fanling
  • We noted down useful information and got what we need
  • We all got lunch and remember to wear school uniform
  • 6L04 successfully sent an email to the environmental resource centre for information about the centre and for permission to go there

Next stage in our Inquiry Cycle:
Our next stage is the Sorting Out stage. That is the stage where we all summarise our research. We also sort out which research is related and important for our inquiry and which research isn’t related and important for our inquiry. We have already started a bit because we had sorted and summarised our research on a Venn diagram (though not finished).  We all have finished our research and summarised it so we are quite prepared for this next stage.

Week 4 Reflection

Week 4 Reflection

This week we have started researching and have continued on our Mandarin pieces.. We have also planned another trip to survey the public members of Festival Walk, and our survey is pretty much complete.

There have been less disagreements among our group and things are going along much smoother. The Easter holidays are coming up so we laid out plans on what we were going to do and our responsibilities throughout the 2 weeks of our holiday.

Some things we have done this week
  • Researched for information about our questions-everyone has to work on different questions
  • Found a lot of research links/ sources of information and put them on our references page
  • Organised a trip to Festival walk to survey different people
  • Formed our survey questions
  • Formed our survey though we still have to confirm it

We are going to Festival Walk to survey people on  2nd May. We made a letter that we had to change because we didn’t know about the Island School Netball Tournament/Coaching at that time so then we had to create another permission letter. We are still waiting for reply slips from numerous group members in the Air Pollution Group and the Environment Group

For the Fanling Environmental Resource Centre trip, we have all returned our reply slips back to school but then none of the parents are available at this time. We had to send an email to Mr Harrison saying that there were no parents that were free at that time and added that we would be grateful if a teacher could come with us to accompany the 2 groups (The Air Pollution Group and the Environment Group). Not long after, we found out that Mrs. Judge is going to be accompanying us.

Skills we have shown:
  • Cooperating with each other (Everybody)
  • Listening to each other (Everybody)
  • Respecting each other (Everybody)
  • Accepting responsibility eg. finishing homework, doing their work etc. (Everybody)
  • Using time wisely (Everybody)
  • Recording data/research (Everybody)
  • Forming questions (Everybody)
  • Communicating with strangers (Jaime)

We are all looking forward to surveying the people at Festival Walk. We hope the following weeks will be going smoothly!

Week 3 Reflection

Week 3 Reflection
Group reflection:
This week we have finalised our lines of inquiry and have formed questions to research on. All of us have already started some Mandarin work, we have made some titles for our Exhibition Journals in Mandarin. We have all already got newspaper articles and books related to our topic to start highlighting and summarising.
Sometimes our group gets sidetracked and we talk about other stuff.

Some things we have done this week:
  • We have set up our roles and know what to research
  • We formed research questions
  • We finalised our lines of inquiry
  • We finished our questions eggs (need to know, good to know and interesting to know questions)
  • We had a meeting with Ms Chung, Ms Fisher and Mrs. Lowe
  • We summarized our newspaper articles and started doing a little bit of research with the books we have borrowed
  • Planned where we are going for our field trip & who we are going with (Air Pollution Group).
  • We did a risk assessment and wrote a letter to get permission for the excursion trip

How did we from our line of inquiry:
  • We found out our interests about what we wanted to research on and what concept we like
  • We thought of questions that we want to research into
  • We changed the questions into a line of inquiry
  • We then thought of the concept it was related to
  • We then decided whether that line of inquiry was suitable for our research
  • We changed the line of inquiry if needed or agreed and decided that this line of inquiry was final

Our excursion: Fanling Environmental Resource Centre:
We are going to the Fanling Environmental Resource Centre on the 30th April.  Jaime experienced a weird phone call when we dialled the wrong phone number-we got the numbers mixed up. We also called the correct phone number for confirmation and booking our field trip. In the end, we are going on the 30th of April from 10:40 Am to 4: 00 Pm with the Air Pollution Group. We had to do a risk assessment that we sended to Mr Harrison so he can approve that we can go. We made a letter that will be sent home our parents and signed as soon as possible to make sure everybody will be going for the trip.

How our group are making decisions and dealing with any disagreements:
We are using the essential agreement to make sure when people do things as we agreed (signed) to. When they are not, we remind them that they are breaking a rule/rules.  The essential agreement is located at the back of the classroom on the window.
We make decisions by brainstorming a list of ideas and then agreeing on the best one. Sometimes, our group just makes a decision without making sure that everybody in the group agrees.
